Pestilence has always been a bit odd for us, even for a horseman. Obviously there’s his unusual physical shape, which I consider the longest-running gag in the comic, and his childlike demeanor, which we use quite often for humor. But he’s immortal, so he technically isn’t a kid–he just thinks like one. So, we explored that interaction a little bit today. I can’t help but feel a little bad for the guy–he might be a giant, shapeless cell and all, but just because he’s the embodiment of every disease known to mankind and many more besides, doesn’t mean he’s undeserving of our love.
How can we NOT love Pestilence, anymore than we cannot love Delirium of the Sandman series? Precisely because he is a kid- or at least, the four horseman’s equivalent of a kid- we feel more for Pestilence because he finds delight in everything.
Please do more Pestilence strips, especially since Sandman is no longer an ongoing.
