The recession has hit the Bebop hard

Ah, Cowboy Bebop. One of the greatest animes of all time, but saying that is one of those things that just…makes sense, you know? It had it all–it was a great atmospheric show, the music was nothing short of crazy good, and the cast of characters…

Well, the cast of characters were a bunch of weirdo loners who all got stuck on the same spaceship, let’s put it that way. And they weren’t particular competent businessmen either. For those of you unfamiliar with the series, they were nearly always going hungry–this was a group of mercenaries to whom the notion “will work for food” was a literal one.

This comic changed completely yesterday evening. Joe and I had a meeting of the minds and decided our approach at that point (which was more of a generalist “let’s get some laughs about confusion over great space operas/space westerns.” We realized it didn’t actually have a punchline, which is sort of important to us.) Never be willing to sacrifice a mediocre idea, I always say. Good thing we also work just a little bit in advance!

For the record

I can safely say that Cowboy Bebop isn’t just one of my favorite animes of all time, but one of my favorite THINGS of all time. I fully intend to get myself a Welsh Corgi named Ein one of these days.

Something that bothered me while working on the strip…. why does Spike have green hair? None of the other characters in the series have exaggeratedly colorful hair, and he isn’t the type to die it that color. Sure, Faye’s hair was purple, but that could easily be seen as a stylized black.
