Strike the earth!Posted Mon, 5/10/2010 by Dave

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the influence of Dwarf Fortress on this comic’s script. For those who haven’t yet had the pleasure of striking the earth and carving out your own dwarven civilization with nothing but the blood, sweat, tears and slightly unstable alcohol-dependent personalities of your dwarves…well, that’s the game in a nutshell. It’s like SimCity with more micromanagement and a surplus of beards. And zany antics involving underground irrigation, elaborate mechanical deathtraps, highly trained military combat squads and, not infrequently, tragic magma accidents.
It’s free, and while calling the learning curve “steep” is an understatement, the gameplay is enormously rewarding. Especially considering it’s all done by a lone programmer. Highly recommended.
Too deep we delved there,

Ah, the Lava Zone.
I truly hope that someday we manage to uncover every video game archetype in the basement.
I kneeeew it was dwarf fortress.
I actually got to the part where he said he dug too deep and was like “Oh hey DF!” then the magma flood and I was like “wait, not DF?” because if you dig to deep you dig straight to HELL
Or was that update not out yet???
FUCK.
Pseudo-Lord of the Rings reference, mayhaps? It made my day. :)
As I recall, I already had my bottle opener out. I had seen the Newcastle Brown Ale box through the door.
Good.
Times.
Ahh, yes, Dwarf Fortress…
On another note, though, the first two frames remind me of the time in Tucker when I could tell simply by how the door opened that it was Gassmann, and held up a beer for him as was appropriate.
