The nutmeg joke, which was kind of a throwaway in which Pestilence’s anatomy proved unpredictable, has gotten a bit of play since then. We referenced it in another strip, and the construction of this comic is recalled later in a strip concerning fireflies, though nutmeg is not referenced in the latter.
Nutmeg as the choice spice is a nod to our friend Rob, who once consumed mass quantities of the substance to see what the hallucinogenic effects were like (yes, hallucinogenic, see Wikipedia). It was not, according to him, a particularly satisfying experience. Rob, incidentally, was a frequent inspiration for Conquest during the time we lived next door to him.
For anyone who may eventually read Dave’s comments about nutmeg, NEVER TRY IT. The ultimate result of that experiment was a state of catatonia beneath the collected mass of several hundred issues of the Cavalier Daily.
