The text in panel 2 is a nod to a linguistic oddity: Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo. I am not quite so cruel as to make a reference in this comic to James while John had had had had had had had had had had had a better effect on the teacher.

I suspect Uberhoof’s little spectral crown is a World of Warcraft reference, but as I’ve avoided that game like the plague Joe’s going to have to deliver the verdict on that one.

Actually, it’s a reference to Hellboy (the movie, at least, not sure of the comic) in the scenes where he’s shown in his full demonic fury, with full horns and such. I used a similar effect on Conquest in two strips.
